About

We build your product on a computer first.

Physical product development still runs the way it did thirty years ago: guess, make, test, throw it away, guess again. Bettrlabs moves the expensive part into software, so a brand only spends physically on what is worth making.

The problem

Most of what R&D costs is spent on products that never ship.

These are the numbers a mid-size Indian food or wellness brand lives with today. They are the reason Bettrlabs exists.

₹25–40 lakh
The typical cost of a SKU that breaks after development — spent whether or not it ever reaches a shelf.
Cost of one failure
60%
The share of product attempts that never reach the shelf at all. Every one of them was paid for in advance.
Attempts that do not launch
6–9 months
Brief to shelf on your own route, one product at a time, because running two in parallel means hiring twice.
Time, per product

Figures are the working assumptions in the Bettrlabs Co-Build model, drawn from typical cost structures for a mid-size Indian brand launching ten products a year. Your own numbers replace them the moment we look at your portfolio.

What we built

A product-development layer that runs before the factory does.

Three things had to exist together for digital-first development to actually work. Any one of them alone just moves the guesswork somewhere else.

01

Simulation

Nutrition, cost and label impact recalculated as a formulation changes. A version can be compared, rejected and replaced as a file, which costs an afternoon instead of a trial batch.

02

A compliance engine

Ingredients, additive levels, category standards and claims checked against applicable FSSAI requirements while the product is still being designed — not reviewed once at the end when changing anything is expensive.

03

A qualified network

Digital work is worthless if nobody can make the result. Labs, pilot facilities and manufacturers are qualified against real capability, so the file that leaves us is one a factory can actually run.

What we believe

Five positions everything else follows from.

01

Most of a product is decided before a factory is involved.

Direction, formulation, nutrition, cost and regulatory position are all settled long before anything is manufactured. That part is information work, and information work belongs in software. Roughly 80–90% of a formulation can be resolved on screen.

02

A brand should see what it is buying before it pays.

Every service we sell lists what you provide, what you receive and how long it takes, before you commit. If we cannot describe the deliverable precisely, we are not ready to sell it to you.

03

The cost of a failed product should not fall entirely on the brand.

A brand that carries the whole downside can only afford safe products. That is why Co-Build exists: we fund the approved build and absorb it if the product never manufactures. It changes what a brand can attempt.

04

You should end up owning your own formulation.

Too many brands discover their formula belongs to their contract manufacturer. Every Bettrlabs model ends with the technical file in your hands — immediately on a Build, and permanently once the investment is recovered on a Co-Build.

05

Compliance is a design input, not a final check.

Treating regulation as the last gate before print is how brands end up reformulating after artwork is approved. We put the constraints in at the start, where they cost nothing to satisfy.

What we make

Four things we built, and what each is for.

01

The Formulation Library

A searchable body of product, ingredient and category briefs — formats, ingredient directions, claims and indicative cost. Free to read, no account required.

02

Buildfile™

The complete, manufacturing-ready record of a product: formulation, process, raw material specs, quality parameters and packaging. The thing a factory can actually work from.

03

Factory Scale Passport

A verified readiness record for a product and the factory making it — specification, compliance, QC and test evidence assembled as one document buyers and partners can trust.

04

R&D Wallet

Prepaid development capacity. A Co-Build partner’s annual fee is credited to it in full and spent across their own products, so the fee is capacity rather than a charge.

Where we work

Six categories, deliberately.

Each one has its own regulatory position, its own cost structure and its own failure modes. We hold benchmarks in these and we say no outside them.

The bench

The disciplines a product actually needs.

A formulation is not one job. It is five, and most brands can only afford to hire one or two of them.

01

Food science

Formulation, reformulation, benchmark reconstruction, sensory and stability work across every category we hold.

02

Regulatory

FSSAI category standards, permitted ingredient levels, claim substantiation and label review, treated as design constraints rather than a final gate.

03

Process engineering

Whether a formulation survives contact with real equipment — scale-up behaviour, process parameters and the gap between a pilot and a production batch.

04

Cost engineering

Ingredient economics, sourcing options, cost stacks and the trade-off attached to every reduction, quantified rather than asserted.

05

Manufacturing

Capability matching, factory qualification, tech transfer and QC specification, so the file leaving us is one a plant can run repeatably.

Beyond our own bench, Bettrlabs works through a qualified network of laboratories, manufacturers and ingredient partners — see Labs & Network. If you run a lab or a factory and want to work with us, that starts at Partnerships.
